Join us as we offer awhi to our rangatahi (youth) and pakeke (adults) who have an interest in either working for an existing whānau operators in Tūwharetoa-based tourism tāpoi (tourism) Māori, or turning their passion into a viable start-up business.

To be held 3 October 2024 - 10am to 3pm
Te Mataapuna, Tūrangitukua Park, Tūrangi

The Ngāti Tūwharetoa Tourism Operator Roopu involved currently consists of:

  • LRFT: Tongariro Tourism Hub – John Tupara and Doug Wilcox

  • The Haka Shop – Snow and Dinny Rameka

  • Squared Away – Rene Kiwikiwi (manages Hole in One for TMGH)

  • Māori Tourism NZ - Matt Amunsen-Fyall (Director of Regions)

  • Destination Great Lake Taupō - Amanda West

  • Roam Consulting - Rowan Sapsford

Tautoko from technical expertise providers:

  • Korio Digital Marketing (Web Builder) – Kim Manunui

  • Finick Creative – Ash Stephens

There is a growing demand for Māori tourism experiences in our rohe, but there is currently insufficient capacity and capability.

A similar hui was held at Te Rauhoto Marae, Taupō in August last year We had rangatahi from a mix of kura from Taupō and Tūrangi attend the first hui along with interested pakeke. With holding a hui at Te Mataapuna in Turagngi we hope to also reach out to whānau based in Taumarunui and Rotoaira.
